Network Marketing During a Pandemic

Well it's been awhile my friends and I have missed you all so dearly. It's been about 3 years since I last sat down and wrote up a blog post on here. In that space of time I feel I have lived a hundred different lives. So to catch up on all that would be too lengthy and frankly not very interesting. I'm starting fresh with a topic I've been mulling around during this very confusing season of life.

In January of 2020 I started a side hustle with an MLM (which I'm not going to name because I'm just not about defamation) and was thrown into a world of Zoom meetings, three-way calls, social posting, text groups with multitudes of people and a community of strong, entrepreneurial women.

I am not a sales woman, in any capacity, which they tell you is not what Network Marketing is about. Well, I disagree with that notion. Product --> Market -->  Lead --> Conversion aka a SALE. You make a profit on that sale. You get notifications about the shipment of that sale. So I rest my case, this job is about selling. And with Network Marketing you are asking someone to purchase the good that you have. So... what happens when there is a global pandemic and millions of people have lost their job?

Morality is a tricky thing when it comes to advertising - which I learned about in my college courses on the Ethics of Advertising. What is "moral" about projecting an image of a product influencing your life? It's a fine, fine line with this and not one that can be easily defined in my opinion. Couple that with a devastating virus ransacking the earth and well that is absolutely the definition of a moral dilemma.

Just to make things more spicy how about we throw in another caveat to conversation. What about the women in this MLM who support their families with this job? What about the women who have lost their jobs and need to pay their bills? There are people still working and there are definitely people looking for a way to make money from their homes while in lockdown. So what does the general public have to say for these entrepreneurs? "Stop working"? Well, they have bills to pay too. "Stop asking people to buy your product"? Well, people still purchase beauty and nutrition products online.

So it's not so cut and dry with the current status of the world because there are two sides to this conversation and each one has its valid points. But how do we as a collective unit identify the ethical and the unethical arguments? It's either all or none for Network Marketing because you either profit or you don't.

Changing the conversation around advertising in the current pandemic is something that needs to happen. We can't pretend that there aren't vulnerable people out there that would be desperate enough to jump head in to a business they see opportunity in. But we also can't be blind to the fact that people don't need products or opportunities marketed to their weaknesses either.

Where do you stand on the subject and what basis do you form that opinion around? I'd be curious to hear additional insight into the conversation because I, quite frankly, am at a loss as to what is appropriate behavior at this time. With that said keeping anger out of this is my main objective - I know how MLM's are viewed to most of the general public and I'm not looking for a lynching. Just a friendly "whatcha think?" answer will suffice.

Finding my Normal // A Month without Blogging

Okay. How many posts have you read about people leaving and then coming back to blogging? How many "I did a digital detox" posts have you seen on your timelines? How many "why I lost my inspiration" can there possibly be out there on the internet?

BLOGGING TIPS // 200TH POST LOOK BACK

So the other day after posting my last blog post I noticed that it was, in fact, my 200th post. Which I think is a pretty great accomplishment and made me reflect on everything that's happened since my first post.

Going all the way back to 2012, my actual first post was a 25 before 25 checklist - which you can read here if you would like. At the time I was 18 and a very different person than I am now and I only have 12 of the items left on my list to check off.

BLOGTOBER DAY 15 // MY FEELINGS: THE BEAUTY STANDARD

The Beauty & Blogging Standard

This is a very spur of the moment post so... bear with me. I believe I mentioned in my post "Is Blogging Worth It?" that a year ago was really when I started to become more interested in investing time and energy on my blog. I had been following certain accounts for so long and never took time to look at new/upcoming blogs. Once I started following the beauty community more is when I really reached peak inspiration. This experience, I would say, was both good and bad.

BLOGTOBER DAY 14 // PHOTOGRAPHY: EDITING

Let's be honest here loves, there isn't a person out there that doesn't appreciate a good filter. And as we blogger, well... it needs to be done. Don't get me wrong, if you have the best lighting and setup that allows you to shoot raw images then you are a master at photography and I commend you! But for us picture lovers who maybe don't own studio lighting you can really make your images look special with a fancy little filter and editing.
So I decided for today's blogtober post I would share my favorite editing apps and software. And here we go!

PHOTOGRAPHY EDITING

LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS // IS BLOGGING WORTH IT?

I know I know... this isn't a blogtober post. I've just had a realization tonight and I have always used this platform as a way to get things off my chest.
It was never about the followers/views for me until almost a year ago. Before that it was mainly a personal diary that allowed me to write about my experiences and reflect on them. Was I happier when that was all I wanted the blog to be?
Don't get me wrong, I really like the blogging community. But, it is a very very large community. A community with a lot of people... doing the exact same thing.
I feel like, outside of my blog/social media/ etc. I am an original person. Just as you, the person reading this, is also original. You have experiences, good and bad, that have made you into the exact person you are. If you are a blogger it's because somewhere along the way you felt inspired to share your very special self with the world.
But what if that inspiration is shrouded in something else? It's hard not to go on social media and see "Sally Whats-her-name" getting sponsorships for products you buy and you love. So you think: "If she can do it, I definitely can" and then you start a blog.
Then suddenly you realize, Sally has been doing this for years... do I have the ability to spend years on this effort just to get that sponsorship? Are those precious hours of my life worth the planning, executing, strategizing, agonizing moments that also come along with blogging?

Maybe I just got too into the possibility or the expectation that there will be success. Because specifically during this very tumultuous time in my life, with no full time job, living back home, etc. I made my identity my blog. And as much as it hurts to face the music, my blog doesn't have much. Sure, I love beauty and I adore makeup but isn't there a million other girls out there who love it just as much? And yes, I really really like being creative and writing out themed posts, but why don't I write a book or script instead?
I'm afraid of the future... I really can't deny it. This blogtober thing got to me a lot quicker than I expected. The constant need to check views or "is my frickin tweet getting high analytics" was maddening! Reading post after post about finding sponsors or monetization was all consuming. And then being smacked in the face just by going on a website like Bloglovin'. There are so many of the same people out there. Do I really have the stamina to even try to get my name in the running?

I think I need to remember why I started this. Not as a full time job, not as an identity, but as an outlet. A place where I can go and be creative and silly and not everyone's g-dang cup of tea.
But for my own peace of mind I will be continuing blogtober. I have enjoyed taking photos, editing them, and writing out the posts. I have enjoyed finding new bloggers on twitter and revamping my bloglovin' account after I abandoned it awhile ago.
But I am making my vow here and now: I, Samantha, will not obsess over views. I will not value my self based on how many likes or retweets on Twitter. And I will continue to put as much effort into having a unique life experience as I can.

If you're reading this, thanks. Xoxo Sam

BLOGTOBER // 31 DAYS OF BLOGS

This might just be the most ridiculous idea I have had in awhile. I'll probably kick myself in a week for even putting the thought into my mind but... what's life without a little bit of madness? So I'm putting my name in the cauldron and taking part of Blogtober!
31 Days... 31 WHOLE DAYS of posting a blog. I really want the content to be good, not just churning out posts for postsake (lol not a word). But I'm up to the challenge and I think it will be great preparation for Blogmas as well.

I will reveal week by week the topics of the blog: A) Because tackling the number 7 is better than the number 31 B) Keep it secret... keep it safe.

I hope you Gals and Ghouls are ready because October is gonna get spooktacular!

Here is week one's lineup:
1) September Favorites
2) Favorite Halloween Movies
3) Fall Bucket List

5) Halloween Decorating Tips
6) Turning Back the Clock: Childhood Halloween Costumes
