SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO MISSION DISTRICT

I wanted to share this cheeky little photoshoot my sister and our friend Alex did this past weekend. I love the mission district so much, especially this area. We went to the Hummingbird Cafe for brunch and then Hidden House for an Iced Chai!
I got my skirt a year or so ago from Nordstrom's but it is my absolute favorite and I have to say it went well with the Train's color scheme! I am also loving straw hats this summer, it adds a special little something I think.
If you are ever down in the Southern California Area I highly suggest taking a day trip here :) xoxo Sam

MY CURRENT STYLE CRUSH

So I feel like I kind of hit a wall in the blogging section of my mind. Honestly, the problem is that I have so many more ideas for fall and winter posts that this awkward, uncomfortably hot, everlasting summer time is just trĆØ trĆØ uninspiring. As I was racking my brain I realized that I have never done a celebrity/blogger/youtuber style post. I have an ENTIRE SECRET Pinterest page just dedicated to celebrity fashion. I have no clue why I keep it on private but Hey we aren't here to ask questions about my weird quirks right? Right.
So as I mentioned in my July Favorites (which can be devoured here) I read "Grace & Style: The Art of Pretending You Have It" and it made my internal gospel choir rejoice. Not only is Grace Helbig unreal gorg but her style tips are so frustratingly sensible! I feel like my style is never ever ever the same and literally changes with my moods so I have a crap ton of random pieces in my closet.

Example:
1. a Woodstock T-shirt for when I channel the flower child vibe
2. button up collared blouse for when I channel my inner preppy vibe
3. vintage dresses from when I wanted to be Zooey Deschanel

It's such a mess and is truly an example of my inner self but I'm telling you the book made me really rethink my shopping habits (as well as a crisis when I literally screamed at my closet for not having anything I liked). So here are some of the pins I have collected of Grace and her fab sense of fashion!

Let me know who your style crushes are and I will 100% check them out and maybe even add them to my secret board which you'll never know because it's private! Okay bye! xoxo Sam

Job Interviewing with Anxiety - My Helpful Tips & Tricks

Heya! Well it has been a very eventful week here and I am just sort of beginning to wrap my brain around it all. Without getting into detail, I will be (and already have been) interviewing for possible job positions in some great businesses. Now I won't be saying what they are but I am extremely hopeful and can't wait to see what comes of them.
However, I know all too well how anxiety-inducing interviewing can be. Especially if it is a higher level position than a typical retail or restaurant job. Not that I am an expert in any way, shape or form, but I am learning different things that have helped me get through them.
I can get horrible social anxiety in situations that I feel are out of my control and one of the most important tasks for me is realizing that interviews ARE in your control. Here is my typical routine before any interview:

1. Be Prepaaaarrreeeddd (Lion King reference lol)
This tip will come up on pretty much any google search of "how to prepare for job interviews" but it means something different from my perspective. When setting up dates for an interview I always set it for a time in the early morning. Why you may ask? because then I'm not sitting around panicking all day long and psyching my self out. Once the interview is set (hopefully with at least three days of mental preparation) I start rehearsing. I will literally stand in front of a mirror and answer questions that you can find online.
At first it is awkward to try to come up with what makes you so wonderful right off the top of your head. And that's okay! That's why you are practicing now. And really take this time for some inward reflection as well. Don't say "I have no hobbies" or "Strengths? Who me?" (two thoughts I have literally had on multiple occasions). And I don't lie and say "My hobbies include making media strategies in my mind" because they know that ain't the truth. Just be yourself!

2. Talk It Out
Whether it's with friends, family, a roommate, a random stranger at Starbucks, tell someone about your nerves. 9/10 times they know exactly how you are feeling (or at least to some degree) and may have helpful hints that they themselves have learned from their previous experiences.
I will literally call up anyone I can beforehand and ask for advice or just vent about how the process is making me feel. They will always be supportive of you.

3. Walk it Out
Exercise can be such a great stress relief, especially with anxiety. I, my friends, am not in great shape so if I go out for a run chances are I am thinking too much about my collapsed lung than my job interview. Or go take a class, just get your mind away from things and sweat it out! Before one of my big interviews last year I took a Zumba class the night before. It was EXHAUSTING and completely hilarious (um 6'2'' Sam out dancing like a mad woman? A very high form of comedic release). That night I slept like a baby and the next day just kept that same mentality and was completely relaxed.

4. Go to Bed!
I am definitely a self-proclaimed insomniac ESPECIALLY if I'm nervous about an event the next day. So what do I do? Be home by 7 and start to wind down, put on some relaxing music, fill up a warm bath tub and sink in. After that do your whole bed time routine, pop a melatonin in (a natural sleep aid) and hop right into bed. Oh it's only 8:30? tough cookies, get in bed. Grab your interviewing notes and skim over them. Don't do practice runs, just browse over the notes you've made and put them away. Light a candle (or if you are like me, incense) and lower the lights. Close your eyes and vision yourself doing amazing at the interview. See them shaking hands with you, throwing cash at you as you walk out the door, starting a parade in your honor for greatest interview ever, whatever makes you happy! Keep your eyes closed no matter how awake your brain is, keep. them. closed. And don't get mad at yourself for not falling asleep just stay relaxed and keep envisioning success.

5. Know Your Worth
So you are all ready for the interview, nice and well dressed, arrived 10 minutes early, said your hello's and they ask you the first question... you draw a blank. Hey guess what, it happened to me. They said "tell me about yourself" and boom darkness. Don't let this get the better of you! Instead take a deep breath, smile, and continue on with the next question. You are an amazing person with incredible skills and knowledge... LET THAT SHINE THROUGH! Don't be intimidated by a professional because they were in the exact same spot at some point in your career.
And even if the interview was horrible and you know you won't be getting the position, don't lose that sense of how great you are. There will be other interviews and opportunities that will be exactly right for you.

So onward and upward my friends! Let me know if you have any tips/tricks that help you get through interviews :) xoxo Sam

Senior 50

So back in 2013 when I was finishing up my first year of college I wrote a list of fifty different things I had learned during my time away. It is so funny to read back on them and honestly for the most part they are still very true. But as I have now completed four years I think I have a more complete understanding of myself and my time here. So I figured I would make a final list on the 50 most important lessons I've learned in college.
1. There's a 99.99% you're going to change your major.
2. Become friends with your professor, laugh at their dumb jokes, ask for guidance.
3. If you feel you are being treated unfairly by a professor, speak up. Chances are other students feel the same.
4. Grades are always negotiable.
5. If you think all nighters are a good idea...you're wrong. Do it once to say you have.
6. Learn the power of time management early on.
7. Extracurriculars are great but don't let them take over your life.
8. Read the g-dang books you are assigned in English classes. Reading is one of life's greatest treasures.
9. If you know your passion never let others interfere.
10. It's okay to not know your passion yet... keep experiencing life, it will come.
11. You may love your college town, you may hate your college town, but let it teach you a lesson about yourself.
12. There's a great chance you'll look into transferring... really assess if your current situation is as bad as you think it is.
13. Netflix should be consumed sparingly.
14. You are going to make best friends in college.
15. You are going to lose best friends in college.
16. That party/bar/frat house will most likely never be as great as spending a night in watching movies with friends.
17. Write your essays ahead of time. Don't become the night-before monster.
18. If you drink, make sure you trust the people you are with.
19. Having a bad day, week, semester is something everyone experiences.
20. Study Abroad. STUDY ABROAD. Even if they tell you it's impossible. Even if you have to take out loans. It will change you.
21. Don't study abroad with friends. Learning to travel alone will be extremely valuable.
22. Go somewhere you don't know the language.
23. Learn a new language in college. It could be the only chance you get.
24. Internships aren't going to come to you. It takes work.
25. Not having an internship doesn't make you a failure. Volunteer or join a club, it's all about experience.
26. Your parents miss you. Give them a call every once in awhile.
27. Leave your hometown for college.
28. Everyone has their own shit going on. But you are never to busy to call an old friend.
29. It's good you didn't peak in high school, it's even better not to peak in college... be patient that your time will come.
30. One day you'll look back at the memory of your first insane college roommate and laugh.
31. Don't compromise your own values to make friends.
32. Find people who are pieces of you, not the whole picture. Be unique.
33. Take advice sparingly... no one knows you like you do.
34. If you get a tattoo: Don't be drunk. Don't be cheap. Don't tell your parents.
35. It's okay to sleep around and it's okay to not sleep with anyone. Trust your intuition.
36. You will probably gain weight and lose it. You are more than the size of your jeans.
37. The cafeteria should never be taken for granted. Free chicken nuggets won't always be a reality.
38. If you thought you couldn't imagine a life without a boy maybe you don't love yourself as much as you thought.
39. If you do something awkward or embarrassing really own the moment.
40. Getting exempt from finals isn't a myth but it does take a lot of effort.
41. GPA doesn't reflect who you are as a person but it does reflect your dedication to learning.
42. Don't let people walk all over you. Find your voice but learn when to let things go.
43. There will be days you think it won't end. And there will be days you think it went too fast.
44. Don't kill yourself trying to be employed straight out of college. You have the rest of your life to work.
45. If you move somewhere cold... buy a good coat.
46. Take lots of pictures.
47. Four quarters is better than 100 pennies.
48. Say thank you to your parents.
49. Never take this time for granted.
50. ...

February Favorites!

Well, hello there. After a brief hiatus I am finally feeling back to my normal self again. There was so much going on in my life at the start of February that I felt so disconnected from everything and, for me, blogging is something I do as a way to express myself. But how can you express yourself when you don't feel like yourself at all???
So here I am. I can't promise that I'll be reliable with this blog because this semester is really turning out to be quite challenging. Not really in terms of school work but just learning how to adjust to college ending. I mean it is a bit of an identity crisis to think that in literally less than 3 months I won't be a student again. But you can read my post that I wrote on the first day of this semester here where I share more of my feelings on that topic.
Without further ado here are my February Favorites! Enjoy :)
Makeup
I had been using the skin toning primer from e.l.f. until it sadly ran out. So my roommate and I went to their store and I picked out this one. So far I like it better than the other one because it's consistency is more like a lotion where as the other one was more oil based.
Obsessed. So obsessed. The name of this is called Long Legged and Fabulous. I mean was it made for me personally??? I think so. I love the pink color so so much! You can find it here.
I am not even kidding the amount of people who asked me what nail polish I wore at work one day was overwhelming. Thankfully I knew the brand! Floss Gloss is an awesome local nail polish company that seriously has THE BEST nail polish. This one is called 95% Angel and it is so gorgeous. I'm someone who usually sticks to pinks, reds, or whites but this color was too good not to try! You can find it here.

Clothing
I'm in serious summer mode already and it is KILLING me trying not to go out and buy shorts, sandals, or tank tops. Maybe this New York winter has been a tease of spring because I am sooooo ready for warm weather again. I saw this shirt at work and literally could not stop picking it up. I convinced myself that if by the third time I saw the shirt and still loved it I should buy it...so I did. I think it's going to be perfect for the beach and the graphic is awesome!!! You can find it here
I know technically this isn't clothing but I went to a Pink store because I still had some money on a gift card. I had been telling myself I needed a water bottle because I never drank enough water throughout the day. I saw this and I so wish you could see the other side because it says "Good Vibes" and the two O's are pineapples! After this month I needed all the good vibes I could get and this not only keeps me hydrated but is also bright and happy! You can find it here

Misc.
Diet: lol.
Movies: OMG so much to say! So the most recent movie I saw was Deadpool which was actually probably one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Ryan Reynolds is a dream and it doesn't matter how gross they try to make him he will always be 100% fiiiine. I also saw the new Zoolander 2 movie which was equally as funny but in a different way. Much like the first one you really had to turn off your brain to enjoy it but after having received bad news literally minutes before the film it was exactly the mind numbing entertainment I needed.
TV: one show and one show only... FULLER HOUSE! I watched the entire season on Friday and I literally do not care what anyone thinks it was so nostalgic. I have also still been watching all my crappy reality shows but the Bachelor is almost over and Girls just started! (I really need to find better television to watch lol)
Music: Because of my summer vacation mentality (in the middle of winter) I have been listening non-stop to the beach boys. This could perhaps be the reason I am yearning for the beach but they really do brighten my day!

I hope you enjoyed the post and I really will blog more now that my personal life is more under control. Lots of love always! xoxo Sam

Winter Break Roundup!

Officially back in my apartment in New York after an absolutely lovely and refreshing winter break at home with my family. It's never easy for me leaving California but I can proudly say I did not cry once the day I left. I made it a point to stay strong as I know that after a quick few months I will be returning to my hometown to figure out the next stage of my life (more on how I feel about this in another post). It seems like the break was really split into two parts which made it feel even longer - the holidays and January. Christmas was so much fun but was so exhausting as we really had two long long days of family reunions (so much food I still can't think about it).

New Years went how New Years usually goes for me... not my favorite. It was actually New Years day that I found I had way more fun than the night before. Maybe I should remember that for next year...
January mostly consisted of spending time with close friends, relaxing, reading, catching up on movies/tv shows, and of course spending time with my sister. The last week of my trip was the most action packed of any of them. First, my mom, stepdad, sister, her boyfriend, and I all went for a ski trip to Snow Summit in Big Bear. It was so much fun I forgot how much I truly loved skiing and it renewed my eagerness to get back out there and keep practicing (I was so nervous before my first run I could barely pull myself off the ski lift!).
Finally for the last day of my trip I went for a day to Disneyland with my best friend and sister. I feel like I really spent a good part of my teen years at Disneyland and it always feels like I'm visiting a good friend. The lines were super short because, first of all, it was a random Tuesday and, secondly, the weather was especially depressing for a California day. But that meant we had a chance to ride almost every single ride!
It's hard to see another break go, especially considering that would officially be the last break of my college experience. But I am back now and really want to make the most of my time here in New York before I move on to start the next chapter of my life. I hope everyone stays warm this weekend as I hear we are getting a huge storm (the weather must've known I would be returning...yipee...) Let me know in the comments down below some of the fun trips you have been taking this winter! xoxo Sam

Day Trip to San Diego + What I Wore

Yesterday my sister and I decided to go and visit my older sister in pacific beach San Diego. It was a semi-chilly day and oddly enough many things were shut down for the winter months...like this is California...come on people it's not THAT cold. (Disclaimer: El NiƱo has everyone in California absolutely in a frenzy of excitement/confusion apparently).

For my outfit choice I opted for green Springfield jeans that are so comfortable that my sister actually gave me. They were bought in Spain as Springfield doesn't exist in the states! (cries forever) The jean jacket is one of my moms old one's from like the 80's that I steal every time I'm home and the shirt is from Zara. The booties of course were bought from Nordstrom Rack but are actually Lucky Brand!

My sister had been raving about this new coffee shoppe called Better Buzz. They have a drink literally called "the best drink ever" and holy moly... IT IS AMAZING. Not only does it taste like heaven but daaaaang was that puppy strong! If you are ever down in that area I highly recommend it!
Here is my drinking said drink... also yes I know one nail is painted on but it ripped off the other morning and I didn't have time to go and get them removed (lol what a mess)

Hope you enjoyed the post! I may try to do more ootd so let me know how you like them! xoxo Sam

Catching Up + 2016 Goals

hey hey hey! Wow, I truly hate to see how long ago the last post was written. This blog may not be super popular but I was excited to see the number of page views growing over the past few months as I put more energy into writing better and more interesting content. It really was more of an experiment, but one that I thoroughly enjoyed!!! When I got home from school I went on a mental and physical reset. You never know how much you have over done it until you come home and just go into total detox mode. Catching up with friends and family, preparing for Christmas, reading books I actually wanted to read, binge watching TV shows... the list went on and it was all lovely.
I was also feeling very unlike myself. It is not uncommon for me to get inside my head too much when I'm away from my family for a long time. The Thanksgiving trip was such a whirlwind I don't think I sat down for more than 5 minutes trying to see everyone and do all the things that I wanted to do while home. I always start to feel like myself again here... which can be both a good thing and well a really bad thing.
I am someone who always battles with self doubt. Sometimes it is the easiest thing to just be like no that'll never work out. Last year I really tried to be outside my comfort zone as much as possible. And I think I am still setting the foundation in my mind for being able to reach my own success. Call it life therapy because I know I came home at a time when I needed an intervention.
And that is what I am going to be talking about at least once a week on this blog. Discovery. That is my word for 2016. Every single time I am going to be in a new situation I am going to think about this word. As I am graduating from Uni this semester and entering into the job world... there are so so SO many unknowns. As a Taurus it is in my nature to have a hard time adjusting to big life changes. That is why I am going to create all the ground work and preparation to make sure that this giant change is nothing more than a smooth flow of gradual adjustments.
I ask that if anyone else is feeling the same that you come along with me on this journey this year. Having a community that is understanding and empathetic can make big life changes so much more possible to conquer. Sure your family is great but 9 times out of 10 they aren't in the same position you are. And although they may think they can relate they still see you and your situation from an outside perspective. But that is why the internet is so much fun! There are people like you, facing similar (if not exact) experiences as you are. I mean how rad is that. So come and discover with me my friends! Let's see how we can make 2016 such a beautiful year full of happiness and balance.
Be back soon xoxo Sam

Thanksgiving Games to Play with your Families

I can't fathom how fast this month has gone by. I mean literally the month of October felt like a never ending cyclone of work and projects and all this other stuff that it just dragged on. But November, which I expected to take FOREVER because of the holidays at the end of the month, has actually flown by and I am just trying to figure out ways to play catch-up with myself.
But more than that Thanksgiving is finally just around the corner! If I haven't said before it really is one of my favorite holidays. I feel like it is a nice little stop before Christmas and brings your family together to share in wonderful conversations, make great memories, and (most importantly) eat massive amounts of food.
My family has some amazing chefs so I can always expect to eat ridiculously amazing food for hours on end. Perhaps this year I'll actually get to sit at the "adult table" (being the youngest in your family keeps you at the kiddie table eternally). But I am so excited to see all my loved ones after so long.
I wanted to just do something fun for this post so below are some game ideas you and your families can play.
*these are not my ideas but I will link you to the source below*

  1. Thanksgiving Bingo (Flavor Wire): This version of bingo is for adults and is probably the most fun if you're the cynical type. Flavor Wire has created four humorous bingo cards and participants cover the squares as the day progresses and they observe things like running out of gravy, someone coming late, a drunk uncle, a pet stealing food, someone starting a story with "when I was your age."
  2. "The Best" (The Idea Room): describes this game which can be played any time of year but is particularly well suited for a large gathering. You divide into teams and compete in silly contests like who can stand on one foot the longest, who has the tallest thumb and any other contests you can invent.
  3. Pass the Nut (Improvements Catalog): Don't worry, this is not a version of passing an orange from neck to neck, but with a small nut - that sounds a bit too intimate. This is essentially a relay race where teams carry small objects like nuts and cranberries from bowl to bowl with chopsticks.
  4. Turkey Tag (Let's Get Together): This is an outdoor game for kids and adults and is a Thanksgiving-themed version of flag tag. The gist is that each person wears three clothespins on their clothing and then everyone runs around trying to remove clothespins from everyone else.
  5. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Drinking Game: If watching the televised parade is a part of your family's annual tradition, mix it up by making it into a drinking game (and not necessarily alcoholic!). A few years ago Chicago Now published their ideas for prompts like "Drink every time a musical performer messes up the lip syncing". The bloggers at Cookies & Sangria have a similar list (although they suggest doing exercises instead of drinking!) including doing a set of jumping jacks when "the hosts refer to bad parade weather in the distant past (>25 years ago)".
  6. Top Turkey Artist (Creative Youth Ideas): This game is a contest to see who can draw the best turkey without looking. The version described here involves putting a book on your head and using that as a drawing surface, but it seems simpler to just blindfold people.
  7. Card Games: A good card game for a mixed-ages group is Uno, if you have a deck. Other games that are easy to learn are Crazy EightsHeartsI Doubt It and Spoons. If you're fuzzy on some of the rules for a card game, Bicycle Cards has a free app with rules to 75 card games that you can download.
  8. Board Games: Board games are kind of a no-brainer. Choose based on the age groups you have or break into a kids group and an adult group. Favorites of mine for adults include Scattergories, Trivial Pursuit, Outburst and Taboo. Good ones for kids are Candy Land, Chutes & Ladders and Richard Scarry's Busytown Eye Found It!.
  9. Parlor Games (One Kings Lane): Parlor games are games for groups to play that don't require a board or anything purchased. The most classic and well known is charades. If you don't know any, here's a list of modern twists on classic parlor games.
  10. Conversation starters: This is less of a "game" and more of a fun way to spark conversations, especially as you're sitting around the table. Either have guests write a few of their own questions or write them yourself ahead of time and then draw them from a bowl and go around the table taking turns answering them. Questions can be anything you like, such as "Where have you always wanted to travel, but haven't yet?", "What is your least favorite food?", "What's something most people here don't know about you?"

  11. Some of these sound hysterical. I remember one year we all sat around and played a Harry Potter Trivia board game and it was one of the greatest memories I have from Thanksgiving. I hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving and that, maybe, you guys can add one of these games to your traditions!
    Much love always xoxo Sam
